Abstract |
The Montreal-born Brian Brooke Claxton (1898-1960) was first elected to the House of Commons as Liberal Member for the Montreal constituency of St. Lawrence-St. George in 1940, and re-elected in 1945 and again in 1949. He was appointed as Minister of National Health and Welfare in 1944, and Minster of National Defence from 1946 to 1954. Claxton left politics for work at Metropolitan Life in 1954, and became the first Chair of the Canada Council in 1956.
