The Canadian Railway Hotel Revisited : The Chateau Style Hotels of Ross & MacFarlane
Abstract
During the first half of the twentieth century, the Montreal architectural firm of Ross & MacFarlane (1905-1912) focused its work on the nineteenth century American-influenced grand hotel. The author examines how the Chateau Laurier Hotel in Ottawa, the Fort Garry Hotel in Winnipeg, and the Macdonald Hotel in Edmonton were designed for the Grand Trunk Railway by Montreal natives George Allan Ross (1879-1946) and David Huron MacFarlane (1875-1950).
