Abstract |
The Australian bushranger novel "Robbery Under Arms : A Story of Life and Adventure in the Bush" by Thomas Alexander Browne, under his nom de plume Rolf Boldrewood, was first published in serialised form by The Sydney Mail between July 1882 and August 1883, then published in three volumes in London in 1888. It was abridged into a single volume in 1889 as part of Macmillan's one-volume Colonial Library series. The serialisation was pick-up by Montreal press baron Hugh Graham (1848-1938) for publication in his two journals - first in the Family Herald and Weekly Star from November 6, 1901 until October 1, 1902, and then in the Montreal Daily Star from May 24 to October 9, 1902. The author examines why Graham picked up this serialisation, and how it fit in, or was adapted to fit, with his personal and editorial philosophy towards Imperialism and morality.
