Abstract |
The mill of the Montreal Cotton Company in Valleyfield, Quebec, was Canada's largest water-powered cotton factory from its beginnings in the 1870s. Backed by Montreal financiers, the company's first president businessman Sir Hugh Allan who held the position until his death in 1882. Allan was followed as president by dry goods wholesaler Andrew F. Gault, who served in the position for twenty-one years. In 1948, Dominion Textile Company acquired the Montreal Cotton Mill, and it ceased manufacturing in 1983.
