Abstract |
A history of Montreal's Henry Morgan and Company department store. The Scottish-born Morgan (1819-1893), in partnership with David Smith, another young Scot, opened the small Smith and Morgan dry goods store on Notre Dame Street in Montreal in 1845. In 1850, in partnership with his brother James, he formed Henry Morgan and Company, opening a store on McGill Street. By the late 1850s, the store was known as "the largest store for dry goods, dresses, and fashion items" in Montreal. In 1866 the store moved to St. James Street, and in 1891 it moved to St. Catherine Street West. In 1960, Henry Morgan and Company was sold to the Hudson's Bay Company.
