Abstract |
Into the 1930s, skiing was still mainly a European intercollegiate sport. In 1931, instead of holding their annual midwinter tournament in Switzerland, the Oxford and Cambridge teams decided to hold it in the Laurentians. While there, McGill’s team challenged the British to a friendly tournament. Although relatively inexperienced and lacking state-of-the-art equipment, the McGill team preformed impressively. The Canadians were invited to participate in the following year’s international competition in Switzerland. The McGill team dominated that event and the “Crazy Canucks” put Canada on the international skiing map.
