Title
Formation et développement d'une élite locale : le cas de Saint-Armand, de 1784 à 1831
Abstract
A study of the local elites (people holding public positions considered as most prestigious within the community) of the Eastern Townships seigniory of Saint Armand between 1784 and 1831. The author identifies three distinct waves of settlement in Saint Armand -- American Loyalists between 1784 and 1791 escaping the American Revolution, New Englanders (sometimes referred to as late Loyalists) seeking arable land between 1792 and 1831, and skilled workers and farmers from New England, Great Britain and Ireland and the St. Lawrence Valley after 1831. The author focuses on four local families (Ruiter, Luke, Abbott, and Krans) and their social networks within and outside the seigniory, offering a view of the strategy used by some of these individuals to obtain important positions. Among the strategies used were membership in the local militia and in the local Freemasons’ lodge.
