Abstract |
A biographical sketch of a Scottish-born shipbuilder who immigrated to Quebec about 1786 and who was elected a member of the Legislative Assembly in 1796. A business failure, Black was employed as an agent provocateur by the colonial government following the militia riots of 1794, and was the Crown's leading witness against David McLane, an undercover agent for France, who was executed for treason for attempting to recruit a fifth column of French Canadians to seize Quebec with the assistance of Vermont adventurers.
