The New York-born Loyalist William Smith (1728-1793) was sworn in as Chief Justice of Quebec on November 2, 1786. He had earlier sat on the Supreme Court of the British colony of New York. The author points out that Smith helped shape the political and judicial institutions of both Canada and the United States.
