Abstract |
St. James Cemetery, founded in 1820, is where the founding fathers of Hull-Bytown-Ottawa are buried. It is the oldest European cemetery in the National Capital Region. Among the people buried in the cemetery are: Philemon Wright, founder of Hull, and his wife Abigail Wyman, the first businesswoman in the area; John Scott, the first mayor of Bytown; Robert Bell, the founder of the Ottawa Citizen; Nicholas Sparks, a rich property owner in Ottawa’s centretown; and E.B. Eddy, one of Canada’s biggest nineteenth century industrialists. St James Anglican Church was founded in 1823.
