The Influence of French on Quebec English: Motivation for Lexical Borrowing and Integration of Loanwords
|
Abstract |
A study of the lexical borrowings from French as evidenced in a written corpus of Quebec English. The author studied the 1994 and 1995 issues of Montreal's The Gazette, as well as other weekly and monthly English language newspapers, over two hundred tourist guides, brochures and pamphlets, and some fifty annual reports and other publications from English language hospitals, school boards and associations. The author's conclusion is that there exists a liberally "francized" lexicon in Quebec English.
