The biographies of Sir Alexander Tilloch Galt (1817-1893) and his son, Elliott Torrance Galt (1850-1928). The British-born Alexander Galt was associated with the British American Land Company. He also sat as the Member of Parliament for Sherbrooke. While serving as Canada’s first High Commissioner in London, he invested in the development of coal fields that his son, Elliott, had discovered in southern Alberta while serving as an assistant Indian Commissioner. Together they founded the North Western Coal and Navigation Company, based near Lethbridge, Alberta.
