| Abstract |
The author describes the Rebellion Losses Bill crisis of 1849 as seen through the eyes of Montreal newspapers. During the crisis, English Montreal Tories burnt the Parliament building, then located in the city, in reaction to Governor General Lord Elgin signing legislation into law that financially compensated those who suffered losses during the Rebellions of 1837 and 1838, even the rebels.
