Edward Ellice and North America: A Study in Canadian-American Relations
|
Abstract |
The London-born merchant-banker and British politician Edward Ellice (1783-1863) inherited his North American commercial interests and land holdings from his father, Alexander Ellice (1743-1805). From his father, Ellice inherited the Seigniory of Villechauvre, commonly called Beauharnois, which the elder Ellice had purchased in 1795. The Ellice family (father and son) was also involved in the fur trade in Canada and the United States.
