Abstract |
The story of Alice Jane Johnson (1857-1903), whom the author describes as "the saddest woman in all of Missisquoi." Based on Alice Jane Johnson's diary, now in the possession of the Missisquoi Museum, the author's biography of this forlorn woman's life is a tale of mental and emotional suffering caused by caring for her tyrannical and abusive father and invalid husband. Never allowed to leave the family home, Alice began to refer to herself as "Alice the Hermit." She wrote of being "buried alive as it were, just as secluded as a cloistered nun" and of how she wished herself "dead and free from bondage." She passed away at the age of 46. Her father and husband both died the following year. The three are buried in the Stanbridge Ridge Cemetery, in the village of Stanbridge East.
