Title
The McGill Normal School -- A Brief History, 1857-1907
Abstract
The McGill Normal School, founded in 1857, became the School for Teachers at MacDonald College in 1907. The author focuses on some of the problems concerning the founding and operation of the Normal School in the nineteenth century. She argues that (elementary) education was regarded as something that had to be developed with some reluctance and extreme caution, and thus the McGill Normal School was run at the lowest possible cost and provided training for poorly qualified students who came from poor families.
