La représentation symbolique dans le contexte de la mondialisation : L’exemple de la construction identitaire du quartier chinois de Montréal
|
| Abstract |
The author remarks that Montreal's Chinatown, formerly a zone of exclusion, unsanitary conditions - a refuge for the mysterious Chinaman - and even a ghetto at one time, has undergone a rehabilitation in the collective imagination since the early 1980s into a "positive ghettoization." The author outlines the history of Chinatown, from the 1870s when the first Cantonese immigrants opened two laundry businesses to the present day when Chinatown is both a tourist destination and culinary magnet, and a symbol of the Chinese pride and history in the city.
