Title
A School for the Future : Policy Statement on Educational Integration and Intercultural Education
Abstract
A policy statement of the PQ Government (circa 1998) on the educational integration of immigrant students and on intercultural education, addressed to pre-school, elementary and secondary school personnel in all regions of Quebec, both public and private, Francophone and Anglophone, youth and adult sectors, and continuing education at the CEGEP levels. The first chapter of the policy describes the diversity of the province's school population and the general context in which the policy will be applied. The second chapter sets out the principles on which Quebec schools should base their accommodation of ethnocultural, linguistic, and religious diversity. The third chapter reviews the tasks facing the school system with regard to educational integration and intercultural education. The final chapter contains guidelines for educational institutions on issues such as the responsibility of school staff for integrating students who are new to Quebec, the learning and use of French, fostering a knowledge of Quebec's heritage and acceptance of its shared values, taking diversity into account in the curriculum, and the training of school staff. All members of Quebec's educational community are instructed to actively support this policy.
