Abstract |
The Scottish-born Neilson (1776-1848) entered Lower Canada's Legislative Assembly in 1818 and became a supporter of Louis-Joseph Papineau's Parti canadien. He broke with Papineau in the 1830s as Papineau's Patriote movement became more and more radical. Neilson was defeated in the 1834 election. According to the author, Neilson "occupied an unique position in Lower Canadian politics by reason of his long association with the French party and his unremitting devotion to what he conceived to be the best interests of the French people. No other man of his race, in this period of Canadian history, identified himself so thoroughly with the aspirations and endeavours of the French-speaking population of Canada."
