Abstract |
A brief biography of the Montreal Canadiens great Howie Morenz. The Ontario-born Howard "Howie" Morenz (b. 1902) played for the Canadiens for twelve seasons, from 1923-24 to 1933-34 and again during the 1936-37 season. He was the first NHL player to accumulate 50 points in a single season. On January 28, 1937, while playing against the Chicago Blackhawks at the Montreal Forum, Morenz went after the puck in a corner of the rink and his skate got caught in the boards. Chicago defenceman Earl Seibert, who was unable to stop, body-checked him and fell on top of him. Morenz’s left leg was broken in four places. Taken to Hôpital Saint‑Luc, he went into a depression when he realized his hockey-playing career was over. On 8 March 1937 his doctors, who had discovered blood clots in his leg, decided that they would operate the next day. But Morenz died of a heart attack at 11:30 that night, the clots having reached his heart. Morenz is buried in Montreal's Mount Royal cemetery and his number 7 was retired by the Canadiens. In 1945, the year it was founded, Howie Morenz was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. The author points out that the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec in Montreal has on file the coroner's inquest into Morenz's death.
