|
Abstract |
A brief history of railway develoment in the Eastern Townships, which from the 1840s, according to the author, was seen as a "universal cure for economic depression, isolation and as the means to achieve a wide variety of economic and social objectives." Among the nineteenth-century Township railway promoters were Moses Colby, CC. Colby, A.B. Foster, L.S. Huntington, A.T. Galt and Ralph Merry. The author focuses on the history of the chartering, planning and building of railways in Stanstead County, in Stanstead Township and in the Town of Stanstead, in the period between 1850 and 1896.
