Title
Folktales and Social Structure: The Case of the Chinese in Montreal
Abstract
A general survey undertaken by the author in 1976-77 of folk culture among the Chinese in Montreal indicated that the transmission and maintenance of an ethnic tradition are affected by the political, social, economic and cultural conditions of the larger society, for the conditions affected both the family and community structures which are the bases on which a folk tradition survives. The author also gives a brief history of the Chinese community in Montreal.
