The Reverend Alexander Mathieson of Montreal: An Inquiry into Presbyterian Practicality
|
Abstract |
Examines the life of Scottish-born Alexander Mathieson (1795-1870), one of the most prominent 19th century Canadian Presbyterian ministers. Mathieson arrived in Montreal in 1826 and, with one interruption, ministered at St. Andrew's Church (now the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul) from his arrival to his death. The author argues that Mathieson and his congregation reveal much about Scottish immigration, the relationship of religion to business success, and the practical implications of church disputes in the 19th century.
