The Quebec Winter Carnival of 1894: The Transformation of the City and the Festival in the Nineteenth Century
|
Abstract |
First suggested by Frank Carrel, publisher of the Quebec Daily Telegraph, in October 1893, the carnival was organized by the provincial capital's French- and English-speaking business communities. Both business communities fully supported the event, unlike the ones in Montreal. The author points out that the winter carnival had both economic goals and historic links which allowed the city's French and English middle classes to perpetuate traditions that dated to seventeenth-century New France.
