Title
Le redécoupage du Bas-Canada dans les années 1830 : un essai sur la ‘gouvernementalité’ coloniale
Abstract
The Gosford Commission (1835-1837) is portrayed by historians as a largely failed attempt at the conciliation of Lower Canadian political factions, or as a delaying tactic on the part of an indecisive British administration. The author argues, however, that this period of Lower Canadian political history reveals a shift in mentality of the colonial government away from a logic of mercantilism towards a liberal political logic. Liberalism is shown to have been able to accommodate quite contradictory notions of equity in matters of political representation.
