Abstract
A history of the professionalization of hockey, starting with the first codification of hockey rules by McGill University students in 1879 and the awarding of the first Stanley Cup in 1893 (to the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association - the MAAA), to the creation of the National Hockey League on November 26, 1917, following, negotiations at Montreal's Windsor Hotel for the amalgamation of two existing leagues, one representing Eastern Canada and the other Western Canada. The author explains the (minor) role that the Quebec City Bulldogs played in the transition from amateur to professional hockey in North America.
