Title
Bibliothèque et salle d'opéra Haskell: Un bijou transfrontalier
Abstract
Designed by the architects James T. Ball and Gilbert H. Smith, then built by the contractor Nathan Beach between 1901 and 1904, the Haskell Library and Opera House was deliberately built astride the border line separating Canada and the United States to serve the communities of Stanstead, Quebec, and Derby Line, Vermont. American philanthropists Martha Haskell and her son, Colonel Horace Stewart Haskell, founded the library and the opera house in memory of the late Carlos Haskell (1824-1865), their husband and father. Carlos Haskell was born in Rock Island, Quebec, today part of Stanstead.
