Title
'Rare Poems Ask Rare Friends': Literary Circles and Cultural Capital: The Case of Montreal's Jubilate Circle
Abstract
An examination of the discourse and works of the poets of the Montreal-based Jubilate Circle, a network of four poets (David Solway, Eric Ormsby, Michael Harris, Carmine Starnino) writing in English in Quebec at the turn of the twenty-first century. The author not only seeks to prove the existence of a literary circle but also attempts to showcase how the circle itself has contributed to advancing its members' literary careers. She examines the conditions in which the poets met, bonded as a group (of friends and of colleagues) and came to found the Jubilate Circle. The author also outlines the history of the various English language poetry small presses and magazines that came into existence (and often folded shortly thereafter) in Montreal from the 1950s to the turn of the century.
