The Role of the Gazette in Linguistic Group Relations in Quebec: A Contextual Approach
|
Abstract |
The author argues that in the late 1970s, Montreal's The Gazette was an institution of the Anglophone population with the same general outlook, values, attitudes and identity. In covering the community it served, the newspaper mirrored the Anglophone reactions, shock, paralysis and anger to the multitude of changes taking place particularly with regard to the English community's status in the province. The author contends that by not adequately covering Francophone history, society and culture, the paper did little to help the Anglophone population understand the motivations and aspirations of French Quebec.
