Abstract |
The author enumerates professional theater performances in Quebec between 1850 and 1879, citing play titles, authors, troupes, venues and directors. Between 1853 and 1872, New Yorker John W. Buckland produced diverse programs in both English and French, using mostly American companies, as artistic director of the province’s main theater venues – Montreal’s Theatre Royal and Quebec City’s Music Hall. When actor Ben de Bar took over the direction of the Royal and the Dominion Theater, program quality shapely declined.
