Abstract |
A five-volume study of the Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning, an organization established by the colonial government in the early nineteenth century to introduce public education into Lower Canada. The author outlines the history of the Royal Institution and reviews interpretations of its role given by Canadian historians from 1832 to 1964. As well, the author presents detailed accounts of the Royal Institution's activities in the Districts of Montreal, Trois-Rivières, Quebec City and Gaspé, a total of 116 regions in Lower Canada.
