Abstract |
A reprint of the diary and letters of Lieut.-Col. Charles Grey (1804-1870), Commanding Officer of the 71st Regiment, assigned to Lower Canada following the outbreak of rebellion in 1837. Grey arrived in Quebec in May 1838 and stayed until July 1839. He undertook a special mission to Washington, accompanied Lord Durham to Upper Canada, and took part in the suppression of the second (1838) outbreak of rebellion in Lower Canada. Grey believed that the colonial government had more to fear from a dissatisfied English-speaking minority in Lower Canada than from French-speaking Lower Canadians.
