Canadian Unity and Quebec in 1942: A Roundtable Discussion among John Humphrey, Hugh MacLennan and Émile Vaillancourt
Abstract
In November 1942, the CBC broadcast a radio program entitled “Canadian Unity and Quebec.” The program was a discussion between three Montrealers – John Humphrey, Hugh MacLennan and Émile Vaillancourt – who attempted to explain the position, problems and aspirations of Quebec within Canada. The article explains how the broadcast came about and how the program script was developed. Novelist Hugh MacLennan (1907-1990) wrote the entire script, incorporating in large part the ideas to be espoused by the other participants, almost in the form of a one-act play complete with stage directions. A connection is made between the broadcast script and MacLennan’s 1945 novel, Two Solitudes.
