Emparons-nous du sport : les Canadiens français et le sport au XIXe siècle
Abstract
A publication of the author's 1993 Master's thesis. The author points out that sports in Quebec does not begin until after 1760 with the arrival of English-speaking soldiers, merchants and administrators. In fact, he points out, with the exception of horse racing after 1840, Francophones were rarely present on any sport field before 1890. Sports clubs were originally organized by Anglophones as social venues more than competitive organizations. The author points out that industrialization, which gradually transformed Montreal after 1850, changed social relations and led a section of the Anglophone middle class to organize themselves in the field of sport. This group drafted rules and imposed a strict regime of amateurism on sports. Their ideology of amateur sport, however, was challenged by the influence of American professional sport, especially baseball, with its more democratic spirit. Montreal's Francophone middle class slowly became interested in sports in the 1890s, and in 1894 established the Association athlétique d'amateurs Le National (AAAN).
