Abstract
A study of the editorial opinions of The Gazette and the Montreal Daily Star between 1939 and 1945, focusing on how these two newspapers viewed Canada’s role in the war in Europe, and French-speaking Quebec’s attitude towards the conflict. The author argues that the two newspapers promoted an idyllic version of Canadian unity and glossed over the cleavage between the two linguistic communities, especially regarding the issue of conscription.
