Abstract |
The Scottish-born Montreal businessman Donald Alexander Smith (1820-1914), 1st Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal, immigrated to Lower Canada in 1838 as an apprentice-clerk with the Hudson's Bay Company. He rose through the ranks of the company to become HBC's Chief Commissioner, Governor and principal shareholder. He later became president of the Bank of Montreal and co-founder of the Canadian Pacific Railroad. In later life he served as Chancellor of McGill University from 1889 to 1914, and as Canadian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom from 1896 to 1914.
