Montreal Engine Foundries and Their Contribution to Central Canadian Technical Development, 1820-1870
|
Abstract |
Engine foundries developed in Montreal in the 1820s to produce marine steam engines for vessels on the St. Lawrence and later on the lower Great Lakes. Until the mid-1830s, most marine engines used in central Canada were produced in Montreal. After a downturn starting in the late 1830s, Montreal founders revived the industry in the 1850s. The author argues that these engine foundries were a major source of nineteenth century technological knowledge and their contributions helped mechanize and industrialize central Canada.
