Abstract
The output in the Yiddish press in Montreal, starting in 1907, sheds a light on the developing East European Jewish community in the city. The first Yiddish newspaper to appear in Montreal was Der Keneder Odlet (The Canadian Eagle). Writing in this newspaper, Jewish immigrants reflected on their situation in a new country, spoke of their plans for the future, and laughed at themselves and their neighbours. The paper also reported on strikes in the garment business, Yiddish theatre in the city, and French Quebec as seen from a Jewish immigrant perspective.
