Title
The Arrival of the Notman Archives at the McCord Museum
Abstract
A description of how Montreal's McCord Museum acquired the approximately 200,000 glass negatives and 450,000 prints of the Notman Photographic Archives, beginning in 1955. The Scottish-born Montreal photographer William Notman (1826-1891) immigrated to Montreal in 1856 and opened his studio that year. The studio was eventually taken over by his sons and remained in operation until 1935. A network of Notman studios were also opened in other Canadian cities and in the United States. William Notman was Canada's first internationally recognized photographer and renowned for his portraits, landscapes, cityscapes and composites photos. Many of these photographs chronicle the lives of nineteenth-century English Quebecers and English Montreal institutions.
