Abstract |
The origins of childhood psychiatry in Canada began in Montreal in 1923 with the founding of the Montreal Child Guidance Clinic. The author points out that the Child Guidance Clinic in Montreal rapidly became a centre to which social agencies, juvenile courts, and schools brought their child psychiatric problems. In 1929, the clinic moved into a building owned by McGill University, obtained a charter from the provincial government, and was renamed the Montreal Mental Hygiene Institute. In 1943, McGill University set up a Department of Psychiatry, with the Montreal Mental Hygiene Institute becoming part of the department.
