The Challenge of the Irish Catholic Community in Nineteenth Century Montreal
|
Abstract |
The authors trace the destinies of Irish Catholics who settled in Montreal in the 1840s, and weigh some of the factors that contributed to their upward mobility. One factor was the presence of an existing Irish Catholic population that, from the 1820s, constituted a third community in Montreal, distinctive in its demographic behaviour and institutional allegiances, alongside Franco Catholics and Anglo Protestants. An examination of sample families shows that these "famine Irish" advanced into new economic niches, their infants thrived, they achieved within three generations substantial improvement in housing and residential integration, and each generation exercised an active and articulate political voice.
