Title
The Tidal Wave of Irish Immigration to Montreal and its Demographic Consequences
Abstract
A demographic and socio-economic analysis of the impact that the Famine Irish and their descendants had on Montreal from the mid-1840s to the turn of the twentieth century. As the authors point out, in nineteenth century Montreal, a city of strong religious and linguistic cleavages, the Irish were a culturally pivotal group, “working, talking, marrying, voting, drinking and rioting ‘across the lines’.”
