Abstract |
Riots broke out in Quebec City and Montreal between Irish Catholics and Presbyterians in 1853 following speeches by Alessandro Gavazzi (1809-1889), an Italian former Catholic priest turned fanatical anti-papist. In Montreal, several people were killed during the riot.
