Abstract |
The London-born George Norris Trent (1790-1857) immigrated to Lower Canada in 1836, after having served in the Royal Navy from 1805 to 1815. Deeply affected by the Napoleonic Wars, the death of his wife in 1830, and the economic and political crisis gripping England, he moved to move to Canada with his two children (Henry, 1826-1906, and Maria Dorothy, 1824-1910). The family chose to make their home in the Drummondville area. He obtained land in the township of Wendover on which he had a large stone house erected between 1837 and 1848. He returned to the United Kingdom in 1854, where he died three years later. Henry Trent inherited the family farm in the Drummondville area, which he ran with some success. In 1906, Henry bequeathed the family property to his son, Frederick Trent (1881-1963), who ran it until his death. Known as the "Manoir Trent" or "Trent Manor," the building that was home to three generations of the Trent family received provincial heritage status in 1964.
