The Guaranteed Pure Milk Co., Limited Cook Book, 1920’s
Abstract
Guaranteed Pure Milk, a Montreal milk distribution company founded in 1900 by Judge Greenshield, was the first such distribution company in Quebec. It was acquired by George Hogg (b. 1865) and his brother in law, M.W.H. Trenholme, in 1901. In 1920, the company was acquired by J.D. Duncan. The company was in existence until 1990 when it was bought out by Parmalat Canada. The author describes the history behind the thirty-nine page "Guaranteed Pure Milk Co., Limited Cook Book". The cookbook, she believes, was published shortly after the Montreal typhoid epidemic of 1927 when the company began the pasteurization of its milk to re-establish the public’s faith in raw milk, and to differentiate their company from others distributing unpasteurized milk in Montreal.
