Abstract |
The author outlines his discovery of the lives of his great-great-grandparents, Thomas and Ellen Castle. The British-born couple lived in Montreal from at least the 1860s, where Thomas Castle first worked as a house and sign painter. By the 1880s, he was the owner of Castle & Son, the 'son' being William T. Castle. William Castle turned the family business into prestigious cabinet makers, decorators and glass stainers (ecclesiastical and domestic glass), whose furniture decorated the homes, country estates and businesses of many of Montreal's wealthiest citizens, as well in the original Ritz Carleton Hotel. The firm worked in partnership with the noted Montreal architectural firm of Edward & W.S. Maxwell. Thomas Castle died on December 19, 1884.
