Originally published in 1936, the author focuses on the political and economic changes in Quebec and Ontario during Canada's transformation from a commercial to industrial economy in the the mid-nineteenth century. The book includes chapters on the effects of the Irish famine migration of 1847 on Canada, and a description of Montreal in 1849 and summary of the events which led to the organization of the Annexationist Movement in the city that year.
