The Idea of Continental Union: Agitation for the Annexation of Canada to the United States 1849-1893
|
Abstract |
Among those who agitated for annexation to the United States were some English-speaking Montreal businessmen in 1849 who signed an Annexation Manifesto following the repeal by Great Britain of the preferential Corn Laws. Those who supported annexation hoped that the United States would give Canada markets for its goods, ensure national security, and provide the finances to develop the west.
