Abstract |
The Grand Trunk Railway was originally conceived by members of Montreal's English-speaking merchant class to orient the trade of Canada West (Ontario) through the Port of Montreal. Incorporated in 1852 to build a rail line between Montreal and Toronto, the company charter was soon modified to extend the line to Portland, Maine, and to Sarnia, with plans to reach across British North America and into the United States. However, by 1920, the railway underwent serious financial difficulties and was placed under the control of the federal government, and in 1923 was incorporated into the Canadian National Railways.
