Abstract |
The predecessor of the Dominion Rubber Company was established in Montreal in 1854. The original company was named for its founders: William Brown, Ashley Hibbard and George Bourne. Twelve years later, in 1866, it was registered as the Canadian Rubber Company of Montreal Limited, and its products were mainly rubber footwear, waterproofed cloth and transmission belts. In the early twentieth century it consolidated with other small rubber companies in Quebec and Ontario to become the Canadian Consolidated Rubber Company Limited and began to produce auto tires in its Montreal factory. In 1926 several more competitive factories were acquired and the name of the company was changed to Dominion Rubber Company Limited. It now specialized in footwear under a variety of brand names, coated upholstery fabrics, mechanical parts, industrial chemicals and vehicle tires. In 1966, the company was renamed Uniroyal Limited.
